Big crowd at door everyday. Go early to put your name down on a list. Or try to jump the queue with a foreign passport. Once you get inside, the procedure is smooth with helpful English-speaking staff.

They don't know the visa policies. They asked us for a letter of invitation that we don't need. We called the ministry of foreign affairs and they confirmed that we don't need an LOI. We also called the US embassy in Uzbekistan and the Uzbek embassy in the US and they confirmed we don't need an LOI. The embassy here does not know their own policies. They'll make it more difficult to get your visa. Get your visa in Bishkek instead. It's much faster and they know the policies. You don't need an LOI if you're American.
